Optimized to provide extremely high I/O throughput, the SunTM HPC 5500 provides exceptional performance for demanding network-based applications. In fact, the GigaplaneTM, our 2.6-GB/sec system interconnect, delivers extremely high system bandwidth with very low sustained latencies. Connected to the Gigaplane are up to 14 high-speed UltraSPARCTM processors and 14 GB of memory. This design, combined with the multiprocessing efficiency of the SolarisTM operating environment, means the HPC 5500 can support the most computationally demanding applications, as well as data sets with more than a terabyte of data.
Highly integrated system design with built-in redundancy.
The highly integrated system design dramatically reduces component count relative to conventional compute servers, making it inherently reliable. With built-in redundancy, the HPC 5500 can tolerate power supply, cooling, or storage failures without affecting system operation-and can automatically recover from most other failures, such as CPU faults, with minimal disruption. The main system components are hot-pluggable so hardware repairs and installations can be performed while the system is on line. And the server's integrated system monitor, SolsticeTM SyMONTM, can even predict failures before they occur, so a component can be replaced before it fails.
